When Is the Best Time to Cut Back Trees in Dublin?

If you've got trees in your Dublin garden that are getting a bit out of control, timing your tree surgery correctly can make the difference between a healthy, beautiful tree and one that struggles to recover. Here's our expert guide to when you should and shouldn't be cutting back trees in the Dublin climate.

The Golden Rule: Winter Is Best for Major Work

For most species of tree in Ireland, the ideal time for major pruning, crown reduction, or felling is during the dormant season, typically from November through to February. During this period, trees have shed their leaves (deciduous species), sap flow is minimal, and the risk of disease transmission is much lower.

Winter tree surgery also causes less disruption to wildlife. Bird nesting season in Ireland runs from March to August, and under the Wildlife Act, it's actually illegal to remove or destroy vegetation during this period if it would disturb nesting birds. This is something many homeowners don't realise, and it's one of the reasons we always recommend getting professional tree surgery rather than doing it yourself.

What About Hedge Trimming?

Hedges have a slightly different schedule. The best times for hedge trimming in Dublin are late spring (May–June) after the first flush of growth, and again in late summer (August–September) for a tidy finish heading into autumn. Avoid heavy hedge cutting between March and August where possible, as this is prime nesting season.

Light maintenance trimming is generally fine year-round, but always check for nesting birds before you start cutting.

Emergency Tree Work: Any Time of Year

Storm damage doesn't follow a schedule. If you've got a dangerous tree, one that's leaning, split, or has fallen, you need it dealt with immediately regardless of the season. Our emergency tree surgery service is available 7 days a week across Dublin.

Species-Specific Timing

Some trees have specific timing requirements. Birch and maple trees should ideally be pruned in late summer or early autumn, as they "bleed" sap heavily if cut in late winter or spring. Cherry trees are best pruned in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease. Oak trees should be pruned between November and February to prevent oak wilt. Your tree surgeon should advise on the best timing for your specific trees.
